iPads and Clay?

Yes! iPad apps can play an important role in ceramics lessons!
Let's explore the Pottery HD app -

This fun app can let students create virtual clay vessels. The students, and you, will be involved in the game of the app but it has so much more value in the art room than just a game. Students can use the app to develop designs for clay vessels. It can also be a great way for students to learn and become familiar with different types of vessels shapes.

See how middle school art educator Lockie Chapman uses this app with her students in her blog post - Ceramics and Gamification

Another great app for creating 3D clay work on the iPad is 123D Sculpt

This one is a free app. Has anyone tried this app with students in art classes? If so...tell us about it!

ABCs With Hello Crayons App from Southfield Christian School

Here's another great example of using the iPad in the classroom from Karen Bosch at Southfield Christian Elementary School! This one combines Art and Literacy with Kindergarten students. Students used the free app Hello Crayons to draw a picture of something that began with a certain letter.
The Hello Crayons app is a simple drawing app that is free - yet it has a lot of in-app purchasing options to increase colors and accessories. I have yet to test this one out - so if you have given it a try - let us know what you think!

I have been teaching Art for  over 18 years in the Moline School District in Illinois. I have a BA degree in Art Education and a MEd degree in Education & Technology. I love Art and Technology - it's a great combination! I enjoy coming up with new projects and ideas for the students  and I to get creative with. Personally I enjoy many different art mediums. Acrylic painting is perhaps my favorite, but I’ve never met a visual art form I didn’t enjoy.
