In addition to creating art, the iPad can be used as a great critique and assessment tool.
SonicPics Lite
Use SonicPics as an assessment tool by importing images of student works. Students can then record themselves talking about their artwork. You could give students a few questions to answer as a script for them to follow. Or use the app to critique the artwork of their peers or of a famous artwork. When finished SonicPics allows you to export the recording as an m4v movie.
SonicPics could also be used as a great method of digital storytelling.
This free version does have limitations - only 3 images can be used in each project and a maximum of 10 minutes of recorded time. The full version is $2.99. It doesn't have image limitations and has lots of great features.

VoiceThread
VoiceThread for iPad is a free app that can be used in the same way as SonicPics. Voicethread is a great tool for students to use to talk about art. Sign up for a VoiceThread account at www.voicethread.com. You can set up a voicethread on your computer or your iPad. The iPad makes it easy to pass along to students to create comments on a work of art. Comments on the iPad can be voice recorded, typed, or even drawn right on the image. A link to the voicethread can be shared for other people to comment on. This would be a great connected classroom project with students in other schools.
